Specialties Matching Services (SMS)

Announcement of Match Results

The NRMP releases specialty Match results information to all enrolled fellowship program directors, registered applicants, and institutional officials on Match Day via the web through the NRMP's secure, web-based Registration, Ranking, and ResultsSM (R3SM) system. The procedures for the announcement of Match results are described below.

Beginning at 12:00 noon eastern time on Match Day, applicants, fellowship program directors, and institutional officials may use their AAMC IDs and passwords to access Match results and associated reports via the R3 system.

  • Applicants will find out whether they matched and, if so, to which program. Match results information also is available to applicants by calling the NRMP office at
    202-400-2233 or 1-866-653-NRMP (6767).
  • Program directors will know who matched to their program as well as the number of unfilled positions, if any, via the Confidential Roster of Matched Applicants, found under the "My Reports" option on the left bar menu.
  • Institutional officials may gain access Match Day reports under the "My Reports" option on the left bar menu.

Also posted to the web at noon eastern time on Match Day are:
    • The List of Unfilled Programs, displays a list of available positions for unmatched applicants.
    • List of Unmatched Applicants, displays a list of potential candidates for programs that went unfilled.
    • Match Outcome for All Programs by State, displays the number of positions offered and filled for all programs in the Match.
    • Match Results Statistics, provides detailed statistical information about the programs, positions, and applicants in the Match.
    • Match Results by Ranked Applicant, displays the match results for each applicant ranked by the program; the NRMP's confidentiality policy restricts it from releasing information about how specific applicants ranked specific programs.

After the general announcement of Match results, fellowship programs forward letters of appointment and associated contracts to their matched applicants. Applicants are expected to return one copy of the letter of acceptance to the program before the deadline stated in the letter.

Both programs and applicants are bound by the SMS Match results. According to the SMS Match Participation Agreement , the listing of an applicant by a program on the program's rank order list and the listing of a program by an applicant on his/her rank order list establishes a binding commitment to offer/accept a position if a match results and to start training in good faith (i.e., with the intent to complete the program) on the date specified in the appointment contract. Such appointments are subject to the official employment and published policies of the teaching hospital in effect on the date the program submits its rank order list and are contingent upon applicants meeting all of the eligibility requirements imposed by those policies. Applicants who are unable to honor their binding commitments must request a waiver from the NRMP. Failure of an applicant or a program to honor the binding commitment is a violation of the Match Participation Agreement signed during registration, and penalties may be levied in accordance with the Match Participation Agreement and the NRMP's Violations Policy if a violation is confirmed.

Reports of any violations of this policy should be directed, in writing, to:
