Registering for the NRMP

Institution Registration | Program Registration | Applicant Registration

AAMC ID

Each user in the NRMP Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3) System is identified by a unique 8-digit code. This identifier is linked to an individual rather than to a school, an institution, or a program. The AAMC has developed a process to assign an AAMC ID to users of AAMC services. Recognizing that many users also are AAMC constituents, the NRMP login code will be the same as the AAMC ID.

Responsibilities for the Match

All institutions in the NRMP must have an institutional official who is responsible for overseeing the Main Residency Match, the Specialties Matching Service matches in which any of the institution's programs participate, and all communication with the NRMP on behalf of the institution's sponsored programs.

Institutional Official

The institutional official must:

  • Promptly activate the institution and participating programs for each of the fellowship matches in which the institution's programs participate
  • Agree to the Match Participation Agreement for each match in which the institution's programs participate
  • Appoint an institutional administrator, if needed, to assist in the oversight and management of the match process at the institution
  • Promptly distribute all information sent from the NRMP to program directors
  • Ensure that all program directors have registered for the current match and have agreed to the Match Participation Agreement
  • Through the R3 System, collect, check, and approve the accuracy of all information submitted by program directors' for registration during the registration process
  • Ensure that all programs offering positions through the NRMP will have met the requirements for match participation by the rank order list deadline for the match
  • Arrange for prompt payment of all fees owed to the NRMP by the institution or any of its programs

Program Director

A program director must:

  • Promptly register annually for the current match by updating their profile information and agreeing to the Match Participation Agreement
  • Provide accurate information about the number and type of positions to be offered through the NRMP NOTE: All program quotas, reversions, or other special requirements must be approved by the institutional official.
  • Provide complete, timely, and accurate information about the program to applicants at the time of interview, including a copy of the actual contract that applicants would be expected to sign if matched to the program, the institution's policies on visa status, and institutional eligibility requirements
  • Prepare and enter rank order lists in the R3 System, ranking applicants in the order preferred by the program director
  • Not ask applicants for verbal or written commitments indicating how they intend to rank the program, which is a violation of the Match Participation Agreement

NOTE: By registering in the Match, you agree to abide by the terms and conditions of the Specialties Matching Service Match Participation Agreement.

Program Codes

Each program participating in any of the NRMP Matches has a unique 9-character code constructed as follows:

  • First through fourth characters - the Institution code
  • Fifth through seventh characters - the ACGME specialty code
  • Eighth character - program type letter
  • Ninth character - track number
  • Example: 1822120FO

Definitions:

  • Institution Code - an assigned 4-digit unique number
  • ACGME Specialty - the first 3 digits of the ACGME code indicating specialty
  • Non ACGME Specialty - the first digit of the 3 digits ACGME number will be replaced by a letter
  • Program Type - Fellowship (F) positions in programs in subspecialties that begin after the completion of a residency.
  • Track number - will be "0" unless an institution has more than one program in a specialty in the same Fellowship Match.

Fees

By enrolling in matches opening after June 30, 2009, the institution agrees to pay the following fees to the NRMP:

Institutional Registration Fee

$175

Program Registration Fee (per program)

$30

Matched Applicant Fee (per matched applicant)

$30

NOTE: Subsequent withdrawal of a program does not void the financial obligation to pay the non-refundable registration fees. Programs in arrears for fees from previous matches will not be allowed to participate in the current Match.

Applicants

To register for the Specialties Matching Service, select the navigation button "Register / Login" from the NRMP home page. The NRMP R3 System uses an AAMC ID and password as the unique identifier of each participant. If you have been assigned an AAMC ID, have it available when you register. If you do not have an AAMC ID, you will be assigned one as part of the registration process.

If you are unable to complete registration in your first session, your initial AAMC ID and password is saved in the R3 System. To complete registration at a future date, you must log onto the R3 System page using your initially assigned AAMC ID and selected password. The R3 System will automatically take you to the page where you initially logged out of the system so that you may complete your registration.

Before registering for a Match, applicants are asked to carefully review the SMS Match Participation Agreement, which is posted on the NRMP web site at www.nrmp.org. When you register for a Match you enter into a contractual agreement with the NRMP and all the programs that you include on your rank order list to accept the position if a match occurs and to start training in good faith (i.e., with the intent to complete the program) on the date specified in the appointment contract. In addition, an applicant who terminates or resigns his position within 45 days of the start date specified in the appointment contract shall be presumed to have breached the Agreement unless evidence is submitted to the NRMP sufficient to show that the applicant entered into the program in good faith and the applicant has a reasonable basis to be released from his commitment to the program.

Fellowship Match

Select the fellowship match for which you wish to register.

Name of Medical School and Graduation

Select the name of your medical school from the dropdown list. Then enter the month and year of your graduation date.

NRMP Password

During the registration process, you will select your own password for future access to the R3 System. You need your password and AAMC ID to access the Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3) System and enter your ranks. Keep this information in a secure place to prevent any breach of security to your rank order list.

Registration Fee

Payment of the applicant registration fee of $50.00 must be made at the time of registration. Payment is made electronically using a credit card or checking account. Registration fee is non-refundable.

Note: Applicants with outstanding registration fees will not be able to enter a rank order list nor be able to be ranked by any program.

Couples

Applicants in the same fellowship match notify the NRMP of their desire to participate as a couple by providing their partner's AAMC ID through the NRMP R3 System and paying an additional $15 per partners couples fee. Applicants who are members of a couple can link their program choices on their rank order lists so that they can be matched into a combination of programs suited to their needs. Applying as a couple should not influence the selection decisions made by program directors.

Withdrawal from the Match

Applicants can withdraw from the Match by selecting Update My Profile from the navigation menu in the R3 System and then clicking the Withdrawal link.

Withdrawal requests must be entered before the rank order list deadline.

Applicants who have submitted certified rank order lists and do not withdraw by rank order list deadline will be included in the Match and will be obligated to accept an appointment if matched, provided all program prerequisites have been satisfied. Applicants in the SMS Matching Program are prohibited from discussing, interviewing for, or accepting a position through any other national matching service or by agreement outside the SMS Matching Program after the rank order list certification deadline.

Updating Your Profile

Applicants can update information in their profiles at any time during the match process through the R3 System. It is particularly important to keep e-mail addresses and phone numbers current so NRMP can contact you.
