About the Organization

The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) is a private, not-for-profit organization established in 1952 to provide a uniform date of appointment to positions in graduate medical education (GME) in the United States.  The NRMP is not an application processing service; rather, it provides an impartial venue for matching applicants’ and programs’ preferences for each other consistently.  The NRMP also conducts the annual Main Residency Match encompassing 40,000 applicants for more than 25,000 positions in core residencies, as well as Matches for fellowship positions in 55 subspecialties through its Specialties Matching Service®.


The Match Compliance Specialist supports the Director of Match Policy and the Senior Policy Analyst in the execution of policy-related case management activities and serves as a point of contact for constituents on matters related to NRMP policy implementation.


(Duties that occupy a major portion of time and are important in the job)

 Case Management (70%)

  • With general oversight from the Director and Senior Policy Analyst
    • manage and prioritize caseload, ensuring compliance with NRMP policy timelines
    • initiate waiver reviews and violation investigations
  • Communicate regularly with all necessary parties and ensure collection of all required documentation
  • Identify/analyze gaps in information and follow up with all parties as necessary
  • Prepare reports and documents, including Preliminary and Review Panel Reports, recommending sanctions based on established guidelines and prior cases
  • Present cases to Director for preliminary review, prior to subsequent review by the CEO and/or Violations Review Committee (VRC)

Records Management (15%)

  • Maintain waiver and violation databases in the Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3) system
  • Update participant records to reflect case activity
  • Prepare regular and ad hoc reports used to prepare biennial reports for the Board of Directors
  • Partner with the Office Manager on case file preparation, report emailing, and filing
  • Work with the Office Manager to organize, scan, and maintain archived case files

Administrative Support (15%)

  • Respond to policy-related telephone and email inquiries
  • Provide online chat support for Operations team during peak periods and as necessary
  • Respond to broad-based policy questions from constituents and ensure answers reflect the content of NRMP Match Participation Agreements and Policies
  • Assist in planning VRC meetings and draft meeting minutes
  • Assist in reviewing annual updates to Match Participation Agreements and Waiver and Violations Policies for accuracy

Candidate Qualifications Sought

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Three to five years of experience interpreting and implementing policy, preferably in a medical or medical education-based organization
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; proven experience in report writing
  • Excellent interpersonal and time-management skills
  • Familiarity with undergraduate and graduate medical education, the residency selection process, or residency/fellowship appointment practices preferred but not required



  • Frequent contact with NRMP Match participants, including teaching hospital officials, residency program directors, medical school student affairs deans, and applicants
  • Periodic contact with members of the NRMP Board of Directors and NRMP legal counsel


  • Serves as policy liaison for staff in answering and/or interpreting general policy questions

This position is primarily sedentary in the Washington DC office with occasional overnight travel and may require some bending and lifting.
