Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Medicine focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of traumatic spinal cord injury and non-traumatic etiologies of spinal cord dysfunction by working in an interspecialty manner. Care is provided on a lifelong basis to patients of all ages and covers related medical, physical, psychological, and vocational disabilities and complications.

Certification in SCI medicine is offered to diplomates of all ABMS member boards, particularly from specialties directly related to the care of persons with spinal cord injury whose diplomates wish to be certified in SCI medicine (e.g. anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery, and urology).
