Research Brief: Impact of Virtual Experience on the Transition to Residency

May 28, 2021

NRMP has released key highlights from the applicant and program director surveys in its Research Brief: Impact of Virtual Experience on the Transition to Residency – Findings From the 2021 Applicant and Program Director Surveys.  In light of the unprecedented changes made to the 2020-2021 recruitment cycle as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NRMP issued applicant and program director surveys in March 2021 that included questions designed to investigate constituents’ preparedness for and perspectives on the virtual experience and its impact on the transition to residency.

This research brief presents general findings on programs applied to, applications received, and interviews conducted in the context of the virtual setting as well as perceived challenges and benefits of virtual recruitment, along with utilization of various “engagement” strategies in the absence of in-person meetings.  The brief concludes with suggestions on ways in which programs in particular can leverage applicant feedback and generate new avenues for promoting better, earlier interaction with applicants both within and beyond virtual settings.
