Residency Applicant Welcome Newsletter
Dear Residency Applicant,
The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) is pleased to welcome you to the 2025 Main Residency Match®! Registration opens at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, September 16.
There are two distinct processes for securing residency training:
- applying to programs through the application service or process as designated by the program, and
- ranking programs, a process managed by the NRMP.
NRMP and the different application service providers (AAMC’s ERAS®, ResidencyCAS, and CentralApp) are separate organizations and applicants must register for both the NRMP and the application service required by the program(s) in which you are interested.
The NRMP maintains a Program Directory for applicants, displaying participating program information and the application service programs are using, where provided, for over 6,000 PGY-1 and PGY-2 programs.
The directory also will be available in the Registration, Ranking, and Results® (R3®) system upon registration for the Match and will be updated as programs continue to provide their application and program information.
Review the 2025 Main Residency Match Calendar to keep track of Match deadlines throughout the process. Match Week and the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program® (SOAP®) will be March 17-21, with Match Day occurring on March 21, 2025. The Match Week and SOAP schedule can be found on the NRMP website along with FAQs, step-by-step support guides, and Match checklists to help you navigate the Match process.
Below is information on getting started and links to important resources. Good luck in the Match!
Welcoming Two New Specialties
We are excited to welcome two new specialties to the 2025 Main Residency Match! Learn more about these specialties that create healthier communities:
Most Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Public Health and General Preventive Medicine residency programs will be using AAMC’s ERAS to accept applications. If you have questions, please contact the program directly.
Registration
The R3 system is used by Match applicants to register for the Match, submit rank order lists of preferred programs, and access Match results and statistics.
An AAMC ID is recommended, but not required, for applicants to register for the Match.
Applicants can find detailed Match registration information and view the Applicant Match Checklist on the NRMP’s website.
Policies
During Match registration, each applicant will be asked to read and electronically sign the Match Participation Agreement (MPA) for Applicants. The MPA outlines the rights and responsibilities of applicants who participate in the Main Residency Match.
Every applicant should read the MPA thoroughly because it is binding. That said, here are some important policies to keep in mind:
Section 6.1 Duty to Act in an Ethical and Professional Manner: Applicants must always conduct their affairs responsibly, starting with the application and extending through the interview and matching processes, SOAP, and through the 45th day following the start date of training in their appointment contract.
Section 6.2 Interview Period: Applicants are expected to judiciously assess and make informed decisions about interview invitations, accepting only those they intend to fulfill.
Section 6.3 Completeness, Timeliness, and Accuracy of Information: At all times, applicants must be transparent with programs and convey all information related to medical school experience, application requirements, visa needs, and any other information that could impact an applicant’s ability to commence training or that programs would otherwise reasonably rely on when determining whether to rank the applicant for training.
Section 10.0 Binding Commitment: Applicants must be willing to enter training if a match occurs; accordingly, applicants are advised to rank only those programs they would be willing to attend. If a matched position cannot be honored, applicants are required to submit to the NRMP a request for a waiver and cannot consider alternate training opportunities unless or until the NRMP approves the waiver.
NEW THIS YEAR!
Section 12.2 Reporting of Violations: Applicants are encouraged to report known or suspected violations of the MPA within one year of learning about the incident. If the incident involves a matched applicant, it must have occurred no later than the 45th day after the start date of the appointment contract.
To foster and provide clarity on Match etiquette, the NRMP also maintains a Match Code of Conduct for Applicants. In addition to language codified in the Match Agreement, the NRMP expects every applicant to:
- Respect a program’s right to privacy and confidentiality.
- Limit post-interview communication to focus on clarifying information needed about the program after the interview has concluded.
Reach out to policy@nrmp.org with any questions. We are here to help you throughout the transition.
