New NRMP Research Examines Residency Program Ranking Patterns
The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) is excited to share the publication of a new peer-reviewed research article in the Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME). In collaboration with NBME, the article explores surgical specialty-level patterns in applicant characteristics included on program rank order lists.
In Applicant Characteristics Associated With Being Ranked by US Surgical Specialty Programs in 2022-2025, NRMP and NBME analyze how applicant characteristics—including applicant type, USMLE performance, sex, and underrepresented in medicine (URiM) status—are reflected on residency program rank order lists in the surgical specialties. Results demonstrate that surgical programs rank applicants differently based on applicant type and USMLE performance, and, to a lesser extent, sex and URiM status, highlighting opportunities to examine transparency during the transition to residency.
