New Charting Outcomes: Characteristics of Applicants Who Match to Their Preferred Specialty Reports

The NRMP® has published its Charting Outcomes™: Characteristics of Applicants Who Match to Their Preferred Specialty reports. These reports examine how factors such as applicant preferences, medical licensure exam performance, research accomplishments, and other experiences affect Match outcomes in the Main Residency Match®. In response to constituent feedback, the reports have been enhanced to include expanded applicant-type reporting and annual publication, improving transparency and the availability of workforce data.

The updated reports include several enhancements informed by constituent feedback, including:

  • The reports will be published on an annual basis rather than biennially to better support applicant and advisor needs.
  • In prior years, a single report presented data for both U.S. citizen and non-U.S. citizen students/graduates of international medical schools. The report now has been separated into two reports – one report for U.S. citizen students/graduates of international medical schools and one report for non-U.S. citizen students/graduates of international medical schools.
  • USMLE Step 2 CK score data presented in these reports are now sourced through direct partnership with the USMLE and its sponsor organizations. COMLEX-USA Level 2-CE score data presented in these reports also are sourced through direct partnership with the COMLEX-USA program and its sponsor organization.
  • Reports include key statistics tables for measures that have median values rather than means.
  • Abstracts, presentations, and publications are now assessed using three separate items whereas they were previously assessed using a single item.
  • Information regarding Sigma Sigma Phi (SSP) medical honor society membership was added to the report for U.S. DO Seniors.

The interactive Charting Outcomes™: Characteristics of Applicants who Match to Their Preferred Specialty  reports are built using data visualization software and draw from the same data sources as the Charting Outcomes™ PDF reports. The dashboard presents data from the past five Match cycles and provides users with clearer, more meaningful views of applicant characteristics.
