Shining a Light on Match News that Matters

This issue of the Illuminator includes:

The 2024 Main Residency Match Opens on September 15

The 2024 Main Residency Match opens for registration on September 15 at 12 p.m. ET. Once open, participating program directors, coordinators, medical schools, and designated institutional staff will receive an instructional email with your username (if you are a returning user to the NRMP R3 system) or a token (if you are a new user to the NRMP R3 system).

The NRMP wants to highlight a few updates to the 2024 Main Residency Match:

  • All Match participants must electronically sign the updated Match Participation Agreement as part of the registration process. The Agreements are designed to ensure a fair and equitable matching process by establishing rules all participants must follow.
  • The Codes of Conduct, which offer guidance on ways to ensure honest, transparent actions that promote equity and well-being, have been updated.
  • The Match calendars are available on the NRMP website. There is a specific calendar for each participant type – medical schools, programs/institutions, and applicants.
  • There is a comprehensive support section on the NRMP website, www.nrmp.org to help participants through the Match process.

Policy Announcement and FAQs: Application Services

The NRMP is aware of the recent announcement made by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) regarding a new application service for OB/GYN applicants and programs beginning with the 2024-2025 residency application cycle. This announcement joins the ongoing efforts of the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons (ACAPS) to utilize their own application for Plastic Surgery applicants and programs (Residency Central Application). While application services are changing, all applicants and programs will continue to participate in the Main Residency Match®, ensuring optimal outcomes for all participants.

New FAQs! We appreciate the UME and GME communities likely have many questions about the pending change for OB/GYN, and we have compiled Frequently Asked Questions to help illuminate how changes in utilization of residency application services, like those initiated by ACOG, align with Match policies and processes. The NRMP will also update the community as we learn more about the application service provided through ACAPS.

NRMP® Publishes Charting Outcomes™: Demographic Characteristics of Applicants in the Specialties Matching Service®

The NRMP is pleased to publish Charting Outcomes™: Demographic Characteristics of Applicants in the Specialties Matching Service® focused on data from fellowship Match applicants in 82 subspecialties for the 2023 appointment year.

The NRMP’s Charting Outcomes™ demographic data interactive reports for both fellowship Match and Main Residency Match applicants, represent the first among medical education organizations to take a comprehensive look at applicant demographic data characteristics as they relate specifically to preferred medical specialty choice and Match outcomes. The aim of the demographic data collection and analysis is to advance understanding of and encourage discussion about relationships among the unique characteristics of applicants, the specialties they pursue, and their experience in the Match.

“The NRMP is excited to offer this new demographic data report as part of our robust research agenda,” says NRMP President and CEO Donna L. Lamb, DHSc, MBA, BSN. “By making the findings available from this work to the medical education community, we believe these data will help inform efforts in understanding and increasing transparency about the matching process and improve diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the transition to residency.”
